: Hi Henry,

: Thanks for the tips. The chipset is an Intel 82430TX two chip PCIset. I managed to track down a manual on the web, which gives memory related info as:

: -- Support Both Fast Page Mode and Extended Data
: -- Output (EDO) DRAM modules

: -- Uses 72-pin SIMM modules X 4 and 168-pin DIMM
: -- modules X 2 auto banking in multiple
: -- configuration, the maximum on board MEMORY
: -- BANK is two.

: -- Up to 256MB

: So I guess the chip set would support me using two 128Mb DIMMs.

: However, I'm still not 100% sure of the BIOS. I had a look at the Chaintech web site for BIOS updates relating to the TX chipset and don't see anything in relation to memory recognision.

: The BIOS I have is "ROM PCI/ISA BIOS (2A59IC39)".

: I am beginning to wonder whether to play it safe by buying a 64Mb DIMM. If it doesn't work, them I've lost less money. If it does then I can buy another one to take me up to 128Mb (albeit at a higher overall cost and restricting further expansion).

: Regards,

: Joe

GOOD DEAL finding the chipset manual. The chipset usually affects supported memory, NOT the BIOS. Don't expect a BIOS change to affect maximum memory (timing parameters - maybe, but not the basics).

My best guess is that you are more likely to have success with the 128MB IF you try sticks with the most chips (lower Mb/chip). Can you either get the memory at a shop that will accept return if it doesn't work for you OR let them install it?

Memory prices are LOW now - something like $50/256 MB, $20/128MB. Sure seems like a time to add memory without breaking the bank.

Good Luck,
