: : A BIOS update could solve your problem - IF it is available and IF it provides large HDD (> 32 GB) support - if not, just use an ATA/66 card - it will support HDDs up to about 128 GB.

: : You need to know your mainboard maker, mainboard model and sometimes mainboard version to identify the correct BIOS update; some or all of this info may be printed on your mainboard or on a sticker on one of the slots or in your manual. If you use the wrong BIOS "update" you will corrupt your BIOS and your PC will not work right.

: : If you need to figure out which mainboard you have just follow the motherboard ID article at:

: would a ata/100 card be alright? will i need new ide cables?

If you have a choice use ATA/66 and save some money. ATA/100 card should work OK, BUT about double the cost and no noticeable speed improvement over ATA/66. New ATA cable may come with the controller - check the box. If you use a standard 40 pin/40 wire cable the controller will be limited to 33 MB/sec (plenty fast for most IDE drives). If you use a new ATA/66 cable, 40 pins/80 wires you will be limited by the slower of your HDD or your controller (the 80 wire cable works with ATA/133 cards, too). The ATA/66 cable will allow the HDD to run at maximum transfer rate for the twenty (20) or so MILLIseconds it takes to empty the 2 MB cache (you can't blink that fast!).
