: I'm a little puzzled with (2m). I need an update flash for bios but I'm not sure if its 2MB or 1MB. My motherboard is Freetech "96f91i" Bios ID is 5/31/1999 i440BX-W977ef-2a69kf2fc.Please email if you can help with flash.

With reference to BIOS (EEPROM) chips, 1M usually means one mega bit (128 MBytes = 131,072 bytes), 2M usually means two mega bits (256 MBytes = 262,144) and 4M usually means four mega bits (512 MBytes = 524,288).

Your BIOS update MUST match your mainboard AND your BIOS chip capacity. Available BIOS updates for your P6F91i are posted (drill down) at:
http://www.freetech.com/

The three posted updates may be 2m; you can tell by the unzipped BIOS update file size. Peel back the Award label on your BIOS chip, uncover the chip number (like SST29EE011 or ...) to figure out what size BIOS chip you have.

Commonly, BIOS chip sizes are given by:
1. Last 2 digits = 1x == 1Mbits, update = 128 MB
2. Last 2 digits = 2x == 2Mbits, update = 256 MB
3. Last 2 digits = 4x == 4Mbits, update = 512 MB

Check the BIOS chip maker's chip specification to get maker's stated capacity, features, pinout and other specs.

Unzip the BIOS update with pkunzip, on a floppy disk. DO NOT unzip the update or a flasher with ANY windows unzipper - it is VERY EASY to start the flasher and erase (BUT NOT UPDATE) the BIOS on the computer you are using. Check the BIOS update file size to see what size chip you need in your mainboard. Does the update match your chip size? If NO, STOP there (might not even work if you try - but why risk it?.

If the update is 2MB and your chip is 1MB - you MAY be able to get a 2MB BIOS chip from Freetech that will work in your mainboard.

Hope this helps,
Henry
