You can usually run a CPU slower (underclocking) without any problems; usually runs a little cooler.

If your mainboard has jumpers to set voltage, FSB frequency and multiplier you can run the CPU but BIOS may report a slower CPU (check actual speed with a CPU Speed Test program (Internet search). Make sure you can set the CPU Core Voltage low enough (2.2V, I think - inspect the CPU, some are 2.4 and ...). AMD K6-2 and K6-3 interpret multiplier setting = 2x as 6.0x, so 2x SETTING (6x actual) x 75 FSB = 450 MHz. Make sure your power supply (power quality stops a lot of faster AMD CPUs) and CPU cooling satisfy AMD requirements at:
http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_739_1102,00.html

Read AMD pubs 21103 and 21085, maybe others.

Check for a BIOS update to support the faster AMD CPUs. Read the BIOS release notes - they will mention adding CPU support for specified models (IF added); if your's is NOT MENTIONED there is NOTHING to gain by BIOS update and your BIOS to corrupt if you "update" anyway.

Check for BIOS updates at:

Good Luck,
