: I recently bought a 40GB hard drive to sit along side my current 8.4GB. I assumed (first mistake) that it would work no problems. The Bios however does not detect it. Any idea's?

A BIOS update MIGHT solve your problem but might not - max drive size MAY be 32 GB. Figure out your mainboard model (printed on the board?) and version (printed or etched on the board) and search for BIOS update on the mainboard maker's web site. READ the BIOS release notes to see what fixes and improvements were made. DO NOT bother to "update" your BIOS unless the release notes state that 40 GB HDDs (larger OK) are now supported. If you "update" anyway you have NOTHING to gain and your BIOS to corrupt.

If no typos in your BIOS ID tring it appears that your mainboard was made by V-Tech (aka PC Partner) at:

If you cannot find a BIOS update to support 40 GB HDDs just get an ATA/66 card - it will support HDDs up to about 128 GB (ATA/33 or ATA/100 would work equally well - BUT note the price differences).

Good Hunting,
