: I need a bios upgrade for ATX AL9 Mainboard with AMD 450 K6-2 processor. I am trying to add a Mxtor 40g harddrive and it won't recognize it. System locks when I run autodetect from bios setup.

Look for free BIOS update on the mainboard maker's web site. You need to know maker, model and sometimes hardware version. Figure out exactly what you have by following the motherboard ID article at:
http://www.pcnineoneone.com

If no BIOS update available just use an ATA/66 card - it will support HDDs up to about 128 GB. It will be plenty fast, too, even if your HDD is ATA/100 (check sustained Data Transfer Rate for your HDD - it is much less than 66 MB/sec).
