It sounds like your BIOS does not support your 8 GB HDD; your BIOS is probably limited to HDDs 2.1 GB and smaller. The best choices for getting larger HDD support are to find a free BIOS update on the compaq web site (IF an update exists at all):
http://www.compaq.com/support/files/

If no BIOS update (update is UNLIKELY) get an IDE expansion card. If you have a PCI slot available an ATA/66 card will support HDDs up to about 128 GB. If you only have ISA slots available you can use a SIIG IDE controller for HDDs up to 8.4 GB or a Data Technology (DTC) IDSE card for HDDs up to 32 GB.

A BIOS update is preferred, if it is available - otherwise a hardware IDE card will serve you best.

Good Luck,
Henry
