: : could be cpu or other component on motherboard overheating....
: : you really MUST go to the manufacturers site for a bios upgrade....without make or model you're treading on thin ice...ie..complete shutdown
: : if you haven't got the user guide you must open the case and find the make and model
:
:
: I suspect that you have an overheating problem - possibly case ventilation plugged, power supply fan stopped, CPU fan stopped or slow, CPU heatsink not seated flat against the CPU - practically any component could be overheating with CPU most likely, video next, then chipset and finally memory. Open up the case and blow into it with a good fan (NOT a case or CPU fan, a REAL fan. If your PC runs OK with cool air blown in - you have a heat problem - just find it.

: I do not believe that a BIOS "update" will solve your problem. If I understand correctly, your PC has been working OK and just started this problem. If TRUE, BIOS update won't help. If you "update" anyway you have very little, if anything to gain and your BIOS to corrupt if you "update" anyway.

: You MAY be able to ID your mainbard without opening the case, but you will need to get into the case to check for inadequate cooling. Identify your mainboard maker (probably Chaintech), model and version by following the motherboard ID article at:

Yeah I've tested it running at 3/4 CPU capacity for a week and it has only shut itself down once, whereas before it happened every 2 hours. Does this definetly mean it's the CPU, or does lowering the CPU mulitplier reduce stress on other components as well.

I do not know how long this problem has been happening, it is a second hand computer. The previous owner did mention something vague about 'it not working so well anymore', so I expect it has at one point worked fine.

Thank you for your help,

Wooti
