Hardware problems.... do I need to update BIOS?

I hope someone can help me out. My BIOS is PhoenixBIOS 4.0

I recently installed a 20GB Maxtor HD. When I went to boot up and install a new OS I got an error: 02B3 which means the B drive is not configured correctly.

So no floppy for the recovery disc and no OS on the HD and nothings happening. I reinstalled the old HD figuring that would correct the problem. But I still get the same error only now I can boot up because the old OS is on the HD.

So I'm wondering if my problem could be solved by updating my BIOS. There is an update available but the directions didn't make sense so I didn't update it yet.

Can I download the update and update from the HD? And could this be the problem with the drive not being set up correctly? I've never had problems with the drive before. Will it help? I've been all through the manual for my BIOS and there's not much help there.

Thanks,

Doug
