: I'm having the exact same problem with the exact same configuration. Did you find out how to fix it?

: : : Hi,

: : : I've got a friend with a 450 mhz computer using Award BIOS v4.51PG. A 40 gig hard drive has been added, but it doesn't show up in the BIOS. This computer has an AWDFLASH message in the startup screen, so I assume it is capable of a flash update to the BIOS. The stats on this computer bios are:

: : : BIOS Date: 02/05/99
: : : BIOS Type: Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
: : : BIOS ID: 02/05/1999-i440BX-W977TF-2A69KF09C-00
: : : BIOS Eval: Version : MT412
: : : Chipset: Intel 440BX/ZX rev 3
: : : Superio: Winbond 977EF rev 1 found at port 370h

: : : Where would I go to look for a bios update (don't know what mfr is noted by above stats), and can I just flash it into the computer using the AWDFLASH option? Thanks.

: : GOOD TIMING with your questions (BEFORE any damage is done). You should look for a BIOS update (IF any exists) at the mainboard maker's web site. The mainboard maker should have update instructions and warnings posted. READ the warnings and the Release notes. BIOS updates are usually cumulative; the latest update includes all prior updates, so read release notes for all of the changes.

: : You must know the mainboard maker (probably FIC), the mainboard model (may be printed on the mainboard) and mainboard version (often etched or printed in a corner of the mainboard - sometimes under a sticker - nearly always on the component side of the mainboard board someplace). Since you are not certain of the mainboard maker and model, follow the motherboard ID article at:
: : http://www.pcnineoneone.com

: : If you confirm FIC as the mainboard maker you should search their site for a BIOS update at:
: : http://www.fica.com

: : It is very easy to misflash your BIOS (a power blink will do it, BIOS update for the wrong mainboard will do it). Suggest that your learn about corrupt BIOS recovery before you need it (lots of update info there, too) at:
: : http://www.amptron.com/Documents/Recover_a_corrupt_BIOS.pdf

: : If you can't find a BIOS update or prefer to avoid the risk of misflashing your BIOS just get an ATA/66 or ATA/100 card; they support HDDs up to about 128GB.

: : Good Luck,
