A VERY common problem with a cheap solution. Get an ATA/66 expansion card (about $20 USD at Fry's) - it will support IDE HDDs up to about 128GB. ATA/100 and ATA/133 cards work too, but cost a lot more and can't perform much better (sustained data transfer rate of current IDE HDDs is MUCH less than 66 MB/sec).
