: I was womdering if I am having the problems with my hardware because of my amibios 686 chip has not been upgraded. I ahve triied everything I know to get it working but this and I would like to know how I would go about upgrading it to be able to read my DVD ROM as a DVD ROM instead of a cd rom like it is currently doing.

If your DVD is WORKING OK (reads DVDs and CDs then you have a cosmetic problem ONLY and no need to worry about it; try to fix ONLY if DVD does not work right - doesn't matter what the PC calls it if it works right. BIOS update might help, might not. You MIGHT have the latest BIOS issued. Go to your mainboard maker's web site and read the FAQs and BIOS Release Notes (for your mainboard) for EVERY Release issued since yours was issued. If there is a fix that addresses your problem it should be listed in the Release Notes for an update issued since yours was issued. If the Release Notes do not mention your problem there probably IS NOT a BIOS fix (yet anyway). Note that the latest BIOS release usually includes all of the "improvements" ever issued for that BIOS. If you choose to "update" your BIOS make sure that you SAVE your current (old) BIOS - sometimes the new, improved BIOS does not work - if the latest update is less than a couple of months old - wait awhile until it is older. Reason: Give the mainboard maker time to find and fix bugs in the latest issue.

If no BIOS or other help posted, contact your mainboard maker or local dealer and ask if there is a fix for your problem.

Good Luck,
Henry
