I have a new computer w/ a Gigabyte GA-7DX motherboard. I was having problems with the modem (can only use if if I delete it and reload the driver after re-starting the computer). In attempt to resolve the modem problem, I tinkered with the BIOS settings. I restored the BIOS to optimum default, but have lost the sound card. I did a clean install of the drivers; the device manager says that everything is working properly; no conflicts, but no sound. My BIOS default settings are "enable onboard sound chip" and "auto detect AC 97 audio." I am running Win2k. I'm guessing that something that should be enabled/disabled is not.
