: I just bought a WD 80 gig hard drive and I don't think my bios will recognize it since it freezes up whenever I try to make it recognize it on the 2nd primary ide. I have it set to master and it's the only thing on the ide cable. This makes me believe it's a bios or motherboard issue. This is the first time I've tried a forum for help on this type of issue, I would appreciate any responses with information, help, or especially a bios update.

: Also, I've never updated a bios before so I would need help on that as well. Thank you

Not likely that a BIOS "update" will fix your problem, but it might. You should look for a BIOS update and update instructions on your mainboard maker's web site. If you need to figure out who made your mainboard and the model just follow the motherboard ID article at:

READ the BIOS Release Notes CAREFULLY - if the feature you need (HDD>80GB) is not mentioned, it is not there (60GB would not solve your problem). BIOS updates are usually cumulative; the latest issue includes all "improvements" to date.

If you misflash your BIOS - Post again - YOU CAN fix it.

The simplest, safest solution is to use an ATA/66 expansion card that supports HDDs up to about 128GB (Cost about $20 USD). If you prefer, you can use an ATA/100 card, about 2x the cost, but very little performance improvement (performance is limited by HDD SUSTAINED data rate - typically < 40 Mb/sec).

Hope this helps,
