: err 1720 is a SMART message and although the failure prediction is not 100%, its good enough for you to remove any important files from the drive and buy a new one as soon as you are able.
What is SMART?
I have a Compaq Pesario 5738 purchased November 1999.
I installed the Maxtor 2.5 GB drive as a slave from my old machined after it died of CPU fan failure.
Everything has been fine until I did a surface scan (thorough) of the Maxtor using Norton System Works 2.0.
The next time I booted the "1720-Hard drive..." message appeared.
I did a surface scan on drive C:, the original Compaq drive, and the message still appears.
The annoying thing is that it doesn't say which drive.
