I doubt that you have a BIOS problem, more likely a poor connection or component going bad. Sometimes switching from Master to Slave or Slave to master makes a difference. Suggest that you disconnect and reconnect the data (IDE) cable a few times and reseat it FIRMLY - maybe use the other connector temporarily as a test. If the problem continues I'd look to HP for a repair - or test anyway (any opportunity to test your CD-RW in another PC?).

If you require a BIOS update (READ the Release Notes - If there is not a fix for your problem there is nothing to gain - and much to lose - if you "update" the BIOS.)

BIOS updates are found on the mainboard maker's web site. You need to know the mainboard maker, the mainboard model and the hardware version; hardware version is usually printed on the board. If you don't know what you have follow the motherboard ID article at:
http://www.pcnineoneone.com

I think your mainboard was made by Chaintech, but you must verify that. If you use the wrong BIOS update you will need to recover a corrupt BIOS (it IS possible). Chaintech's web site is at:
http://www.chaintech.com.tw

Good Luck,
Henry
