: I Have a Intel I440ZX Chipset Board, with the BIOS REV C, the Bios String ID is
: 04/19/1999-I440ZX-W977TF-2A69KSHCC-00,
: I would like to know whether this BOARD supports USB Devices, I have 1 USB Port which can connect 2 USB Devices. In the BIOS there is no option availabe either to enable or disable the USB PORT, Is it possible to use my USB device by upgrading my BIOS, if yes from where can i get the BIOS update patches.

: Kindly Help

Some of the earliest mainboards were made to the first USB standard which was superceded rather quickly (those early boards had USB disabled - no hope for them). Your BIOS date indicates a later mainboard so the onboard USB function may work. It appears that your mainboard was made by Lucky Tech but they seem to be gone (

If you know your mainboard model you can find some information posted at:

If you decide to try using your USB you MUST BE CAREFUL. I am aware of at least ten DIFFERENT USB header pinouts with "matching" plugs. The problem is that +5VDC power and ground are usually at opposite ends of the header and plug. If you get the plug and the pins misaligned or if you use the plug for a different mainboard you will have a dead short until the trace fails (like a fuse). That would destroy the USB function and possibly more (power supply and/or mainboard).

The only thing I have seen "standard" on the plug end of the connectors is wire colors: RED = +5VDC; BLACK = Ground; Green = Data (+) and White = Data (-). You can move the pins around to match your onboard header pinout if necessary.

The safest route is to get a USB expansion card - it will be wired correctly and it should work for you.

BE CAREFUL, whatever you do.

Good Luck,
