Every year at April 26th thousands of computers beefing hit by famous W95/CIH virus.
If your machine doesn't boot (black screen, no Hard Disk activity), or NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND message appears there is a HUGE chance you just joined the club.

What is CIH >>

W95/CIH is one of few viruses that actually destroy hardware (BIOS) and also all HDD data.

What does it do >>

CIH virus destroyed BIOS of older >PII computers by reflashing it and blows the boot sector of any HDD with trash, destroying all the data.

How to fix >>

There is nothing to do, if your BIOS gone you must get another one (usually to upgrade to another motherboard). Again, CIH destroys old Pentium I, early PII motherboards. New BIOS's have a better protection.
About the data. You can recover it (with several limitations) using Fix CIH (http://grc.com/cih.htm) or similar tool, but the chances are few. If you cannot recover any thing you would have to clean up boot sector properly with Disk Editor tool (trivial format wouldn't help) (cheflab.com) on another machine.

How to prevent >>

MOST of today's antiviral software can easily recognize and clean infected files. Symantec offers special tool called KillCIH to search and destroy the CIH virus (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/kill_cih.html).

And have some antivirus installed ;)

P.S. About 12 ppl lost their machines today and the number would grow.
