The same exact thing happened to my cousin's Compaq CDS 972. It turns out it wasn't the disk controller, but the 540mb Quantum hard drive attached to it. The drive was dead, but I didn't have another drive that was under a gig to test to see if the controller still worked. Try another small drive if you have one. Just remember to write down the original drive's BIOS settings before you change them to the new drive's parameters.
