David if you didn't solve your problem yet, I hink I might have the answer.
Iinstalled a 30 g western digital on my older machine and the instructions there said if i ever had
to boot to a floppy after ezbios was installed to do the following:
1. Remove any disk from the A drive.
2. reboot computer...says e-zbios initializing
says e-zbios Hold CTRL key for status screen or to boot from floppy
3. Press and hold CTRL key. A status screen displays.
4. read the screen prompt and type: A
5. insert bootable disk into drive A. Press enter.

Booting from the floppy should bypass the e-zbios and let
you use your recovery disks.
Hope this is what you need. If not call the hard drive manufacturer
or HP either should be able to help. If your manufacturer is western digital
their tech support is free and excellent.
