BIOS update problem -- lots of doubt

I'd like to update my BIOS -- its an Acer V1.2R1.6(1994). I have a couple of queries about it.
1) I partitioned my HD using Discwizard by Seagate. The problem is that I tried to boot the system up with the required bios update, but was unable to do it because of Seagate's OnTrack. Does anyone know how I can SAFELY disable this? I've read (so far) that if I uninstall it, I'll lose everything on my HD. Is there another way around it -- please help me!
2) Would updating the BIOS help my system (motherboard) 'recognise' a high-density EDO RAM when it can't right now? I have three 16MB EDO RAM -- and basically only 8MB comes out of each right now. Someone told me that perhaps they are high-density and cannot be recognised by my really old version of BIOS. Is this true?

If possible, email me any replies .. I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you.
Lena
